- UTUSAN

TAMPIN: Four members of a family, including an elderly couple, were brutally murdered in their adjacent homes in Kg Batang Rokan, Gemencheh, about 40km from here, yesterday.

Atan Daud and his wife Sofiah Katas, both in their 80s, their son-in-law Ismail Awang, who was in his 60s and his daughter Siti Khatijah Ismail, 22, suffered severe slash wounds and were believed to have died on the spot from their injuries.

Their mutilated bodies were found by Ismail’s younger daughter, Siti Mariam, 18, when she returned from school at about 2pm.

Atan’s daughter-in-law Maznah Tukiman, 47, who rushed from her house at Felda Serting, said Siti Mariam first saw Siti Khatijah lying motionless on the porch of their house.

“When she walked closer, she saw a knife sticking out from her sister’s back. There was blood everywhere,” Maznah said.

Siti Mariam then ran to her grandparent’s home next door and had another shock when she saw their bloodied bodies.

“She also stumbled upon Ismail’s bloodied body in the hall. She then ran off to seek neighbours’ help,” she added.

It is understood that the siblings’ mother Habshah was away at work in a nearby factory at the time of the murders. Her colleagues brought her home immediately after learning of the tragedy.

It is learnt that the police were looking for Ismail’s son Rashidi, 20, who is missing.

The siblings’ uncle Mohammad Atan, 42, who rushed over from Nilai when informed of the murders, said he had no clue why anyone would want to commit such a heinous crime.

“This is shocking. My parents never had enemies. Why would anyone want to kill my brother-in-law and niece?” asked Mohammad, who works as a technician at a factory in Nilai.

Both Habshah and Siti Mariam were too distressed to be interviewed.

Neighbours described Atan, a former imam and village headman, as a humble man.

A friend also said Atan was unwell when they last met on Friday.

“He suffered from a kidney ailment and was unable to even get up. He also had to undergo dialysis thrice a week,” said Bujan Emban, 63.

Police brought in tracker dogs and a forensic team was also despatched to the scene from Seremban. However, their work was hampered by a downpour the entire evening.

Meanwhile, state OCCI Asst Comm Zaki Masroh said police found a weapon which was possibly used in all the murders. - THE STAR
